Physical Work Safety
The Greene County FISH Pantry has many different volunteer spots. Several spots require physical labor and lifting heavy boxes. All volunteers are expected to take appropriate safety precautions while working to prevent injury.
Proper Lifting Techniques
Safe lifting involves:
Standing as close to the load as possible
Planting your feet shoulder-width apart with one foot slightly ahead of the other
Bending at the hips and knees only until you're deep in a squatting position
Keeping your head up and straight with your shoulders back to keep your back straight
Holding the load close to your body at waist height
Engaging your core muscles as you push against the ground and straighten your legs
For additional information on proper lifting techniques, visit the OSHA Proper Lifting Techniques website.
Safety Using Box Cutters
The Greene County FISH Pantry uses box cutters during everyday operations.
Box cutters are available at the check in desk.
In case of a mishap, report the injury to the Executive Director and use the First Aid Kit located across from the check in desk.
Tips for using Box cutters:
Cut Away: Always cut in a direction away from your body and legs to prevent injury if the blade slips.
Keep Hands Clear: Ensure your non-working hand is far from the cutting path. Do not use your thumb as a guide for the blade.
Retract Blade: Immediately retract the blade into the handle when you are finished making a cut.
Use Proper Pressure: Apply firm, consistent pressure rather than excessive force, which causes blades to break or slip.
Wear Protective Gear: Use cut-resistant gloves to protect your hands from nicks.
Safe Handling: Never leave a cutter unattended with the blade exposed.
Safe Passing: Pass the cutter to someone else by the handle, or set it down for them to pick up rather than tossing it.
Blade Disposal: Place old or broken blades into a designated, puncture-resistant sharps container, located near the check in desk.
Never Catch a Dropped Cutter: If the cutter falls, let it hit the ground.
Inspect Before Use: Check that the blade is sharp and in good condition before starting, as dull blades are dangerous.
